PAST PROJECT: TBF Billfish Tagging Program

Bisbee Fish & Wildlife Conservation Fund (BF&WCF) has partnered with The Billfish Foundation (TBF) to give the already highly successful Billfish Tagging Project (Established 1990), a major technological renovation. Because BF&WCF & TBF essentially share the same mission – “a world with thriving fish and wildlife in natural habitats enjoyed by today’s population and preserved for tomorrow’s generations” - the combined efforts of both organizations will result in a highly successful marriage of technology and science based movements that will accomplish the unified vision.

Since 1990 there have been over 200,000 Tag & Release reports with over 15,000 release reports annually across the globe. TBF has accumulated an incredible amount of data pertaining to growth rates, migratory patterns, habitat utilization, post-release survival rates, stock assessments, etc. It is the largest international tagging program in the world.

BF&WCF is working with TBF to incorporate this valuable information into a modernized technology data system and a new tagging device that will readily communicate information and data using cell phone application technology and other developing “smartware.” BF&WCF has formed a coalition of top software developers, database experts, environmental engineers, and the scientific community to develop a modernized system to increase conservation stewardship of this shared precious resource.
