Entering its fourth year, the IGFA Great Marlin Race (IGMR) continues to provide exciting and new information on the behavior and distribution of marlin. To date, 78 blue marlin, 27 black marlin, six white marlin, and five sailfish have been tagged with satellite tags during 19 IGMR events spread across the globe. Cumulatively, these billfish traveled over 53,000 miles and recorded over 6,500 days of data.

MAY 2015 -- We have are nearing the end of the 2014 Victoria, Seychelles IGFA Great Marlin Race (IGMR) where two blue and one black marlin are competing for first place!

As reported in the last update, the third tag in the race popped off of Team Albemarlin’s 45 kg (99 lb) blue marlin after six days. After close examination of the data, we concluded that the tag was most likely consumed by a yellowfin tuna!

Last year, the IGFA Great Marlin Race (IGMR) had its first event in Mexico at the Bisbee Los Cabos Offshore Tournament in Cabo san Lucas.The tournament had tags sponsored by teams Sporty Game, Wild Hooker, Wildcatter and Tiger Spirit.

A new pop-up from a satellite tag deployed during Bisbee's Los Cabos Offshore Charity Tournament has tipped the IGFA Great Marlin Race past the 50,000 nautical mile (nm) milestone! Since the IGMR began in 2011, there have been 18 tag deployment events in 12 countries and territories, tracking movements and behaviors of black marlin, blue marlin, white marlin, and sailfish around the globe.

OCTOBER 2013 -- With 30 satellite tags deployed in blue marlin, black marlin, and sailfish in six countries, the second year of the IGFA Great Marlin Race (IGMR) has come to a close. The IGFA’s billfish research program, working in collaboration with Stanford University, held seven tagging events in 2012-2013 that tracked a total of 17,059 nautical miles (nm) on imperiled billfish species worldwide, covering more than 5,000 nm more than the previous year.
